NMP- European Producers VS Imports

N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) is produced through a process known as the N-methylpyrrolidone synthesis. This process involves the reaction of N-formylpyrrolidone with methanol in the presence of a basic catalyst, such as sodium methoxide. The reaction takes place at high temperature and pressure. The N-formylpyrrolidone is produced by the reaction of pyrrolidine with formaldehyde. The pyrrolidine can be produced from propylene, which is obtained from the oil and gas industry.

The reaction between N-formylpyrrolidone and methanol yields NMP, formic acid and water as by-products. The NMP is then purified and distilled to remove any remaining reactants or byproducts. It's worth noting that there are different methods for making NMP, but this one is the most common industrial process.
